Islamabad, Sep 3 (IANS) At least 76 people were killed and more than 160 injured in three powerful explosions in Pakistani cities Friday, two days after triple blasts ripped through a Shia religious procession in Lahore killing 35 people.

This is the largest number of killings in a day after 117 people died in a blast in a busy Peshawar market in October 2009.

At least 73 people were killed and more than 150 injured Friday in a suicide blast that ripped through a Shia procession near Meezan chowk in Quetta city, the capital of Balochistan province.

Earlier in the day, two people were killed and six injured in a blast at a shrine of the minority Ahmadi community in the Canal Road area in Mardan city of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

In Peshawar city, a huge explosion ripped through a police van leaving a policeman dead and three others injured in Achini Bala area, according to Dawn. The police van was badly damaged in the remote-controlled explosion.

Bomb disposal squad officials in Quetta confirmed the blast was caused by a suicide attacker who blew himself up. As many as 59 bodies were received by combined military hospital (CMH), 10 were brought to civil hospital, while Bolan medical complex received four bodies.

Driver of Aaj TV crew Muhammad Sarwar also died in the blast, while several cameramen covering the procession were injured. City police authorities said the participants of the procession were asked to disperse, as per prior agreement, before Meezan chowk but they did not heed to it.

Meanwhile, the banned radical group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the attack, Xinhua reports.

The Punjab-based Sunni group also disclosed the identity of the bomber, named Rashid Moaawia, 22 years old. The group was founded in 1996.

Angry participants of the procession and activists of Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) resorted to aerial firing after the incident and torched a government building. A van of a local TV channel was fired at that shattered the windscreen. However, the driver and other staff remained unhurt.

Balochistan Shia Conference has announced 40 days of mourning to condemn the blast. Chief Minister Sardar Aslam Raisani has announced to provide free treatment to all injured people. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has ordered high level probe into the unfortunate incident.

Emergency has been declared in Quetta hospitals to cater to the situation. Because of Shia community processions scheduled across the country after Friday prayers, security was on high alert because of terror threats.

On Wednesday, three serial blasts within half an hour in Lahore killed at least 35 people and wounded over 200.

The first blast occurred near Karbala Gamay Shah in Lahore's Lower Mall area while the second and third blasts were near Bhatti Chowk, just a few paces away.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the Lahore blasts.

Project Samosa: Indian detained in Canada for terror plot http://www.worldnewsforum.net/showthread.php?t=14025&goto=newpost Fri, 27 Aug 2010 01:49:32 GMT Toronto, Aug 26 (IANS) Two Canadian Muslims - one reportedly hailing from India - arrested in an Al Qaeda-linked plot were charged with terrorism... Toronto, Aug 26 (IANS)

Two Canadian Muslims - one reportedly hailing from India - arrested in an Al Qaeda-linked plot were charged with terrorism Thursday and remanded to police custody till Sep 1.

A Pakistani-origin third suspect named Khuram Sher, who had auditioned for Canadian Idol, was also nabbed Thursday morning. Under what is curiously called "Project Samosa", the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested two suspects early Wednesday. One of them said to be named Misbahuddin Ahmed who reportedly comes from India.

It is the second Al Qaeda-linked terror plot to be unearthed in Canada after the Toronto-18 plot of 2006 in which 18 Toronto-area Muslims were arrested for plotting to blow up Canadian targets, storm parliament, take leaders hostage and behead the prime minister. Eleven of these plotters were convicted.

Terror suspects arrested Wednesday were under watch of the national security task force of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for months.

Authorities said the ringleader of the terror plot had travelled to the region between Pakistan and Afghanistan for training in weapons. Arrests were made when one of the suspects was about to travel abroad as part of the alleged plot, they said.

Though police didn't name the suspects, one of them is said to be 36-year-old Misbahuddin Ahmed who worked as an X-ray technologist at an Ottawa hospital. Reports quoted sources as saying that Ahmed comes from India.

Robert Farrell, a former Canadian diplomat who rented his place to Ahmed, told the Ottawa Citizen newspaper that the suspect told him that he was born in India but had lived for a time in Saudi Arabia.

"We met his wife at the time (of renting). She seemed quite nice. She wore an Iranian-style head covering (hijab). They seemed to be more of a traditional Muslim family," Farrell said.

Five kilometres away from Ahmed's residence, police arrested another suspect Hiva Alizadeh.Reacting to the unearthing of the terror plot, a spokesman for Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said, "It is clear that Canada is not immune from international or homegrown radicalization. The government continues to participate in activities to better understand extremism throughout the world and the motivations of individuals who engage in terrorism."

According to security experts here, homegrown terrorist cells are plotting to target Canadian power plants and transmission lines which carry electricity to the US.
"There are ways of attacking the US through Canada. The whole energy for New York comes from Quebec (province), for example," security research expert Anthony Seaboyer was quoted as saying.

In fact, the famous Millennium Bomber Ahmed Ressam, an Al Qaeda-linked Algerian who lived illegally in Canada and had plotted to blow up Los Angeles in December 1999, had entered the US from Vancouver.

Though Canada has tightened anti-terror laws after 9/11, the Americans still find the response of its northern neighbour inadequate.
