Quang Binh may lose big project preserving Phong Nha Ke Bang http://www.worldnewsforum.net/showthread.php?t=13898&goto=newpost Sat, 21 Aug 2010 06:49:04 GMT KwF, a German non-governmental organization, wants to stop funding a project to preserve the Phong Nha-Ke Bang world natural heritage site. ... KwF, a German non-governmental organization, wants to stop funding a project to preserve the Phong Nha-Ke Bang world natural heritage site. LookAtVietnam - KwF, a German non-governmental organization, wants to stop funding a project to preserve the Phong Nha-Ke Bang world natural heritage site in the central province of Quang Binh because the project management board reneged on its commitments.

The German Government started the 12.63 million euro project in October 2008, with technical and financial assistance provided by KfW Entwicklungsbank and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation.
The 8-year project aims to maintain biodiversity in Phong Nha-Ke Bang, develop the buffer zone, protect natural resources in the park, and reduce poverty for 56,000 residents living there. However, many of the projects have stagnated or have not yet developed after nearly two years.
The project’s target is to develop 4,250 hectares of forest and to protect over 11,000 hectares of existing forest, including 600 hectares in 2010. So far no tree has been planted.
KfW provided the project management unit with over 350,000 euros to plant forest in July 2009 and the board has disbursed EUR114,000, but no tree has grown.
The German NGO asked the project management unit on several occasions to provide records showing its disbursement in 2009, but the board has evaded these requests.
On June 14, 2010, KfW sent a note to Quang Binh provincial authorities, the local Department of Planning and Investment, and the project management unit asking them to give back the remaining 200,000 euros that had not been disbursed.
According to KfW, Quang Binh province and the project management unit violated agreements signed between Quang Binh and KfW. The project management board has not reacted effectively to the clearing and burning of natural forest in the buffer zone. The project management board has also not taken the initiative in managing the project.
KfW didn’t approve the project management unit’s budget or activities plan for 2010.

Many people can take mistakes in applying for a visa arrival to vietnam:
We have listed here a few mistakes that travelers may usually make to help you avoid the same things when you apply for a visa on arrival to Vietnam.

1 - No visa on arrival without applying online: many people believe that they can get a visa directly at Vietnam airport without applying online. That is wrong, you can not until the visa is approved. So, you will need to apply online for an approval letter in order to pick up your visa at Vietnam airport.
2 - Visa on arrival at the border: Visa on arrival works for air travel only. So, if you do not enter Vietnam by air, just make sure you have the visa in advance.

3 - Spelling/Typo mistakes: Many travelers fill in the Application form with wrong detail as: full name on passport, passport number or date of birth. Normally, many people think it is not important but in some cases, your application can be refused by the airline at the departure airport. So, make sure that you entered everything correctly and carefully.

4 - Arrival date: Many people think that the visa validity will start from the date they enter Vietnam, not from the date they provide, however, it is not. The visa validity will commence from the date you provide in advance, not from the date you will enter the country. So, just make sure that you make a clear plan of when to enter before ordering a visa to Vietnam.

5 - Visa extension: many travellers think that it is easy to extend a visa once they are in Vietnam, however, in fact, it is not that easy, and extending a visa may be a costly and time consuming process. So, if possible, just apply for a 3 month visa in advance instead of a 1 month one to save money on visa extension.

Canada pledges another $31M in aid for Pakistan http://www.worldnewsforum.net/showthread.php?t=13762&goto=newpost Sun, 15 Aug 2010 02:13:18 GMT *Canada pledges another $31M in aid for Pakistan* Image: http://blstb.msn.com/i/17/B4268AE283B60DA3E6B4BB1B1FA2.jpg Canada has... Canada pledges another $31M in aid for Pakistan

Canada has pledged $31 million in additional aid for flood-ravaged Pakistan, the federal government announced Saturday.
The government had already announced $2 million in aid last month.
Most of the $33 million from Canada — $25 million — will be used to provide food, clean drinking water and to deal with the burgeoning health crisis there.
The other $8 million will go to improving Pakistan's ruined transportation network and restoring communication links.
"The trail of devastation and the desperate humanitarian situation caused by the floods have worsened with the continuing rains," said government House leader John Baird.
"This contribution will help meet priority needs, which include food, water and sanitation, emergency medical care and shelter, essential household goods, logistics and co-ordination efforts, and the deployment of Canadian relief supplies."
About 1,500 people have been killed in floods that have torn through many northern communities of Pakistan and are spreading in the south.
As many as 20 million people are homeless, Pakistan's prime minister said Saturday.
Nearly 700,000 hectares of crops in Pakistan are under water, according to the United Nations.
The UN has appealed for $460 million in initial aid. The United States has donated the most, at least $70 million, and has sent military helicopters to rescue stranded people and drop food and water. Britain has pledged more than $32 million US.
Other major donations, also in U.S. funds, include $10 million from Australia, $5 million from Kuwait, $3.5 million from Japan and $3.3 million from Norway.
