Women strain to see the front of the line for German government food kits being handed out under Canadian military protection in Leogane Haiti, south of Port-au-Prince, Monday Feb. 01, 2010. Photograph by: Allen McInnis, Montreal Gazette OTTAWA — Canadians have donated "an astounding" $113 million to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, a sum that will be matched by the federal government, International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda said Monday. "It makes me proud to be a Canadian, " Oda said. She spoke at a news conference with Canadian Red Cross executive secretary Conrad Sauve, who said Canadians might be the most generous to Haiti of anyone in the world on a per capita basis. Almost one-fifth of $500 million donated to the Red Cross for Haiti around the globe has come from Canada, he said. Oda called for another "big push" for donations by Friday, the deadline for federal matching funds. And she said government funds would come from a pool of crisis money the government set aside. It would not be necessary to pull funds from other programs at the Canadian International Development Agency. Meantime, the Foreign Affairs Department said another Canadian death in Haiti was confirmed on the weekend, bringing the toll to 27 since the Jan. 12 quake. No information was available from the department on identification of the victim. The department's website also said there are still 75 Canadians unaccounted for. In an update on 'Operation Stork,' the government said the final chartered flight of Haitian children approved for adoption in Canada would arrive in Ottawa on Wednesday. Remaining children will come on other flights. The government has already brought 181 of 217 children approved for adoption to Canada. Sauve said the Red Cross has spent $20 million on emergency services in Haiti and will be involved in the distribution of shelters and establishment of settlements. Shelter is the priority identified by the United Nations office for the co-ordination of humanitarian affairs in its latest bulletin on Haiti. "The outpouring of contributions and fundraising efforts have extended far beyond expectations," Oda said. "There are five days left in the matching period and we are encouraging every Canadian to make an additional effort to support the victims of the earthquake in Haiti." © Copyright (c) Canwest News Service |

Great thing from Canada.
